Can I get medical cannabis in Ireland, Wales, Scotland, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man?
Yes, medical cannabis can be prescribed anywhere in the UK, including England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.
Can I get an NHS prescription for medical cannabis?
In the UK, it is very difficult to obtain a medical cannabis prescription through the NHS. While NHS prescriptions are technically allowed, they are only issued in exceptional cases.
What conditions can medical cannabis be prescribed for?
In the UK, medical cannabis may be prescribed by a specialist doctor for conditions where other treatments have been unsuccessful. Some of the most common conditions include:
- Chronic Pain – Including neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and arthritis
- Neurological Disorders – Such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), and Parkinson's disease
- Mental Health Conditions – Including anxiety, PTSD, and depression (in certain cases)
- Gastrointestinal Disorders – Such as Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Cancer-related Symptoms – Including nausea, appetite loss, and pain management
Each prescription is assessed on a case-by-case basis by a specialist, considering individual medical history and response to previous treatments. If you're unsure whether medical cannabis could help with your condition, contact Can Clinic for a consultation.
My condition isn't listed?
We treat a wide spectrum of conditions and subconditions which means we might treat your condition even if it is not listed. Please call the clinic or drop us an email and we will be able to confirm.
How do I become a patient? / What are the eligibility criteria?
To be eligible as a patient, you must meet the following criteria:
- Diagnosed Condition – You must have a confirmed diagnosis of a condition that may benefit from medical cannabis treatment
- Tried at Least Two Treatments – You must have previously tried at least one licensed medication and/or one treatment like physiotherapy, CBT therapy or similar for your condition
- Supply a copy of your medical record – If you log in or sign up using your NHS login we can review and approve you in 24 hours in most cases
Can I get a medical cannabis prescription in the UK if I'm under 18?
Yes, but only in exceptional cases, such as severe epilepsy, and it must be approved by a paediatric specialist. We currently do not offer this at Can Clinic.
Do I need a referral from my GP to get medical cannabis?
No, you can self-refer to a private clinic without needing a GP referral, which means you can directly book an appointment without involving your GP.
